Rock Hill Area YMCA To Build New Facility in Baxter
Village
June 13, 2002
The YMCA is coming to Baxter Town Center. The Rock
Hill Area YMCA plans to purchase 35 acres in Baxter from Clear Springs
Development Company, the developers of Baxter. "We are very
excited about our agreement with Clear Springs Development. I think
that it is a great fit for both of us," said Frank 'Moe' Bell,
CEO of the Rock Hill Area YMCA.
The YMCA plans to build a full-facility Y in Baxter Town Center.
According to Bell, "The ultimate plan includes a fitness center,
group fitness/aerobics area, child care, indoor pool, outdoor play
pool, multi-purpose ball fields and trails."
During construction of the 60,000 square foot facility, they will
occupy up to 4,000 square feet in Clear Springs Development Company's
first building in Baxter Town Center. Clear Springs Development
Company is expected to break ground on the building, known as the
"Springmaid" building late this summer. "Within one
year, we hope to have a presence in Baxter Village to begin serving
the community," explains Christle Ross, Branch Director of
the Gold Hill Branch YMCA.
The YMCA began seeking sites to build a much larger facility to
meet the needs of the growing area. The YMCA at Baxter Town Center
will serve all areas of Fort Mill/Tega Cay. Ross said, "At
this point, we also plan to keep the Gold Hill Branch YMCA at 1785
Gold Hill Road in operation."
"We're very excited to have the YMCA's presence in Baxter,"
says Don Killoren, CEO of Clear Springs Development Company. "Their
orientation and programs are a great fit with our overall vision
for Baxter."
The Rock Hill Area YMCA has been serving the area for 89 years.
The first branch opened in Rock Hill in 1913. Since then, the Rock
Hill Area YMCA has grown to include 6 branches in Rock Hill, Chester,
Clover, York and Fort Mill. The Gold Hill Branch in Fort Mill opened
in 1999.
Baxter Village is a mixed-use neighborhood in Fort Mill. The 1,033-acre
development includes approximately 1,500 homesites, as well as an
elementary school, public library, and urgent care center. Baxter
also includes more than 500 acres of open space and will include
retail and commercial development. For more information on Baxter
Village, call (803) 802-TOWN or toll free (877) 570-HOME. The Baxter
Information Center is located at the neighborhood's main entrance
off Highway 160 and Interstate 77 at Exit 85. Visit Baxter on the
