Village of Baxter Chosen as Case Study at National New Urbanism Symposium
Charlotte, NC - October 17, 2005
The Village of Baxter in Fort Mill, SC was recently featured in a case study presented to 60 architects, planners, engineers, and others from around the country. The case study of Baxter was held as part of a program entitled "New Urbanism in Charlotte: The Legacy of John Nolen." Held in Charlotte September 7-10, this national symposium was sponsored by The Seaside Institute in collaboration with the Levine Museum of the New South and the Charlotte Regional Office of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company.
The Baxter case study was presented by Mike Brunetti of Celebration Associates on September 9. Leslie Pickel of The Seaside Institute said that Baxter was chosen early in the planning process of showcasing Charlotte for its exemplary design and master plan implementation. "Celebration Associates and Clear Springs Development Company have re-introduced the ideal neighborhood to Fort Mill," said Ms. Pickel. "Mike and his team have done an outstanding job of bringing back the type of lifestyle we all crave: connectivity, walkability, and inspired design."
"The Legacy of John Nolen" refers to the legendary planning pioneer John Nolen, who created Charlotte's Myers Park in the 1910s as a 1,000-acre neighborhood which is now renowned as one of the South's finest garden suburbs. Nolen went on to create over 400 designs across the country. His ideas have become a touchstone for "New Urbanism" today. His designs are credited with achieving balance between the conveniences of a city and the beauty of nature.
Baxter Village is a 1033-acre traditional neighborhood located off I-77 at exit 85. Baxter is now home to over 700 families, and approximately 700 more homesites are under development or planned. Baxter is also home to an on-site YMCA, elementary school, public library, urgent care center, and over 500 acres of open areas.
